Firms struggle to find “work ready” graduates

Companies are struggling to fill graduate positions because they cannot find enough quality candidates as the economy picks up.  9 out of 10 graduate employers still have vacancies for this autumn, according to the Association of Graduate Recruitment (AGR). Businesses in areas such as engineering an IT are particularly badly affected with employers “sparring” for the best graduates.

Adam Marshall of the British Chamber of Commerce, said “during the downturn, businesses had a wider pick of candidates.  Now the labour market has tightened we’re seeing evidence of sparring for higly qualified graduates and poaching returning to sectors such as engineering and manufacturing. He added that graduates were often not “work ready” and did not have the skills to thrive at work.

A poll by the AGR found that half of employers had increased their graduate intake targets but 87% still had vacancies for this year.

Comment :- Here at Downtown Recruitment we have seen a steady number of graduates coming through to register although we anticipate the majority of candidates to come through after their final exams have finished. If you’re looking for graduate candidates this is obviously the time of year to contact us!
