UK employment reaches record high!

Official figures out last week from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed that employment reached a new record of 30.9 million in the three months to December.

At the same time, the number of out of work people dropped by 97,000 to 1.86 million. This was 486,000 fewer than the previous year and helped push the unemployment rate down to 5.7 per cent from 6 per cent in the three months to September, its lowest level since August 2008.

At one point, the Bank of England linked the first rise in interest rates to the unemployment rate, but this policy was scrapped when it became clear that the number of out of work Britons was falling much faster than expected.
